Cyclone Jokwe Skirts Madagascar March 7, 2008
Cyclone Jokwe can be seen strengthening as it passes the northern tip of Madagascar.
An area of disturbed weather over the western Indian Ocean rapidly formed into Tropical Cyclone Jokwe on Wednesday.

Maximum sustained winds reached 70 mph (110 km/h) as the storm clipped the far northern tip of Madagascar late in the day.

Forecasters predicted Jokwe would strengthen to a Category-2 storm as it approached the coast of Mozambique, on the African mainland.

That country has already suffered from months of devastating floods, probably triggered by the La Niņa ocean-cooling in the tropical Pacific.

Jokwe passed Madagascar as U.N. officials were issuing urgent appeals for assistance in providing aid to the survivors of Cyclone Ivan, which struck the island between February 17 and 19.

The agency said the immediate goal of the appeal is to provide food, security, drinking water and education to the affected population.

At least 84 people were killed and 177 went missing when Ivan swept across the island. It was one of the worst storms to strike in Madagascar's recorded history, and also left 190,000 people homeless.
