Iceland's minke whaling fleet showing off one of its first catches after it resumed killing whales in 2006.
The BBC reports that an Icelandic official has confirmed that the country is likely to issue a quota to kill about 100 minke whales over the upcoming North Atlantic summer.
After resuming commercial whaling in 2006, Iceland said it would issue additional quotas only if there was a demand for the meat.
The country’s minke whaling industry says it has sold all the meat from the last two years’ catches, which shows there is an appetite for whale products.
• Greenpeace announced that its peaceful interference with Japan’s whaling fleet in Antarctic waters over the past two months has resulted in the harpoon ships killing less than half of the 985 whales targeted.
