A 7.3 magnitude temblor and hundreds of strong aftershocks caused extensive damage to property in western China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region over a 4-day period, according to state media.

The initial, and strongest, jolt hit Friday at 8:33 a.m. local time in Xinjiang’s Hotan prefecture.

According to Xinjiang Seismological Bureau, 889 aftershocks hit the Hotan Prefecture through Monday afternoon, of which 68 had magnitudes between 4 and 4.9, four were above magnitude 5.0 and one struck with a force of magnitude 6.4.

The Xinhua news agency reports 97,600 people were affected by the quake swarm, which damaged or flattened 2,283 houses and toppled hundreds of lifestock sheds and greenhouses. Despite the extent of the damage, no casuaties or serious injuries were reported due to the quakes.

In 2004, the Hotan government launched a project to build quake-resistant houses in the quake-prone Kunlun Mountain region. More than 1.2 million people in 257,000 households had moved to new quake-resistant buildings by September last year, Xinhua reported.
