Bay of Bengal Cyclone Nargis Takes Aim on Myanmar May 2, 2008
The circulation of Cyclone Nargis can be seen approaching the coast of Myanmar (Burma).
An area of disturbed weather over the western Bay of Bengal intensified into potentially dangerous Tropical Cyclone Nargis.

The storm was predicted to intensify to Category 2 force with winds of up to 120 mph before striking Myanmar’s Arakan coast late in the week.

Nargis also brought gales and storm-force gusts to southern India’s Bengal coast before taking aim on Myanmar.

Officials in Bangladesh warned on Thursday that fishing vessels in the south of the country should remain in port until the high winds and heavy seas from the passing cyclone subside over the weekend.

Thousands of people along coastal areas of Bangladesh are still recovering from the devastation caused by Cyclone Sidr last November.
