Aftershocks Rumble Through Chinese Disaster Zone June 6, 2008
Quake Map of China
Hundreds of additional aftershocks of the devastating May 12 Sichuan temblor jolted China’s aftershock zone.

The China Seismological Bureau reports that nearly 10,000 aftershocks have jolted the region, with the strongest registering a magnitude of 6.4 on May 25.

The past week has seen at least 215 seismic echoes rumbling through the disaster zone, where officials say the death toll is approaching 70,000.

The week’s strongest aftershock registered a magnitude of 5.3 and caused additional alarm among the survivors.

The bureau says it has set up observation stations to continuously monitor diastrophism (deformations in the Earth's crust) and gravitational anomalies within the quake zone to study the full geological effects of the temblor.
