The outer bands of Typhoon Fengshen can be seen bringing locally heavy rain to eastern parts of the Philippines on Friday.
Tropical Storm Fengshen strengthened to typhoon force just to the east of the Philippines late Friday local time.
On Friday afternoon, the center of the intensifying storm appeared on satellite images to be moving toward the central coast of the Philippines.
But forecasters said Fengshen would soon veer northward, then northeastward before reaching shore.
The storm was predicted to remain far from any significant land areas during its potential lifespan, threatening only shipping lanes.
