Powerful Quake Jolts Indian Islands July 4, 2008
Quake Map of India
A sharp 6.6 magnitude earthquake rocked a wide area of the Bay of Bengal from India’s Andaman Islands to southern Bangladesh on Friday evening, June 27.

Police officials in the Andaman capital of Port Blair said the shaking caused panic among residents, but no damage or injuries were reported.

The Indian Meteorological Department determined the quake was centered about 75 miles (120 km) southwest of Port Blair and occurred at 5:40 p.m. local time.

The remote islands well off the east coast of India were among the many areas devastated by the Dec. 26, 2004, Indian Ocean tsunami.

That disaster was triggered by a 9.1 magnitude earthquake off the northwest coast of Sumatra.
