The southeast Caribbean nation of Trinidad and Tobago was jolted early Friday, July 4, by a 5.6 magnitude quake centered off Trinidad’s eastern coast.

The Seismic Research Center of the University of the West Indies said it was the second quake to strike the country within a week.

Friday’s quake awakened some residents when it occurred at about 2:35 a.m. local time.

“The earthquake was reported as felt in Galeota on Trinidad's east coast as well as offshore (oil) platforms east of Trinidad. There have been no confirmed reports of damage or injuries,” the center said.

The previous Friday, a mild tremor occurred northwest of Trinidad and was felt in St Augustine, Marabella, St Joseph, Blue Range and Glencoe in Trinidad as well as in Grenada.

There were no reports of damage or injuries during that seismic event.
