A strong earthquake rocked southern Japan’s Okinawa Island on Tuesday, but there were no reports of damage or injuries.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake registered a magnitude of 6.0 and struck about 30 miles beneath the bed of the Pacific Ocean near the island.

“Our building shook quite violently, but we managed to stand on our own feet, and nothing fell on the floor,” said Yasumori Uezu, a police spokesman at Naha City, a community nearest the quake's epicenter.

Okinawa is about 1,000 miles (1,600 km) southwest of Tokyo.
