Pacific Hurricane Elida Moves Away from Mexico July 18, 2008
Spiraling bands of Hurricane Elida can be seen moving westward over the open waters of the Pacific.
The fourth named storm of the Pacific hurricane season strengthened into Hurricane Elida on Monday after forming off the Mexican coast over the weekend.

The country’s National Meteorological Service said heavy rains from the storm’s outer bands had fallen over some coastal areas before Elida began moving westward, away from shore.

It remained well to the southwest of the popular resort of Puerto Vallarta and far south of Cabo San Lucas on the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center predicted that Elida would be a threat only to shipping lanes until it weakened well before reaching the Hawaiian Islands.
