Tropical Storm Kalmaegi lashed the Philippines early in the week, leaving two people dead across northern Luzon Island before later slamming into Taiwan.

Officials said the storm triggered flash flooding that affected 82 villages. Kalmaegi then strengthened to typhoon force just before reaching Taiwan late Thursday.

Packing sustained winds of 67 mph (108 km/h), the Category-2 typhoon made landfall in sparsely populated Ilan county, according to the island’s Central Weather Bureau.

Schools and businesses had been closed in some areas on Thursday afternoon as TV showed local flooding beginning to occur.

Chinese officials warned coastal residents of Zhejiang Province that Kalmaegi would arrive Friday evening or Saturday morning with a strength comparable to when it arrived on Taiwan.

Official forecasts have the storm skirting the East China coast, then moving out over the Yellow Sea near Shanghai over the weekend.

Residents of South Korea were on alert for the storm’s possible arrival by Monday morning.
