John Veage, President of Cronulla Boardrider, snapped this photo before the overnight visitor was returned to the ocean.
Pre-dawn swimmers in one of the saltwater pools at a popular Sydney area beach were apparently unaware that they were bathing with a 3-foot (1-metre) shark that had been washed into the pool overnight by a freak wave.
“It's still dark then and they mustn't have even noticed it was there,” said Cronulla Surf Lifesaving Club spokeswoman Robyn Cole.
A passerby who later discovered the wayward shark said it was happily swimming up and down at one end of the pool.
Fisheries officials were called in to net the unwanted visitor, which was released unharmed back into the Pacific.
Cole said that seals frequently sunbathe around the pool, and dolphins visit the beach quite often.
But she said this is the first time she’s heard of a shark getting caught in a pool.
