Magnet-laced nets could keep fishing fleets from accidently catching sharks.
Researchers in Australia say they have discovered a unique and effective way to keep sharks away — a magnet.
A team from the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries, and James Cook University, says its findings could help keep sharks out of fishing nets.
“They react violently to the magnets, rapidly turning and swinging away from them,” said researcher Jamie Seymour.
He said sharks and rays have acute sensing organs that detect electromagnetic fields in water. While the use of magnets could benefit fishing fleets.
Seymour said he doesn’t believe they could prevent shark attacks on humans.
