Typhoon Nuri Pounds Northern Philippines August 22, 2008
Typhoon Nuri appears disorganized as its circulation attempts to recover from passing over the northern Philippines.
Landslides triggered by Typhoon Nuri’s torrential rains killed seven people in the northern Philippines, many of whom perished when their houses were buried in mud.

Large parts of Luzon island were drenched by heavy rain, including the Philippine capital of Manila, forcing schools and businesses to close on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The eye of Nuri skirted the northern coast of Luzon Island as a Category 2 storm before the island's rough terrain weakened it to Category 1 force.

Nuri then remained disorganized as it took aim on China’s Guangdong coast late in the week.

China began evacuating coastal fishermen and those living in low-lying areas well in advance of the storm's arrival.

Areas around Hong Kong and Macau also began typhoon preparations after the Hong Kong Observatory predicted that Nuri would pass directly over the financial center with winds just under typhoon strength on Friday evening.
