Cloudiest British August Since 1929 September 5, 2008
Cloudy skies behind London Eye
Cloudy skies often marred the vistas this summer for visitors to the London Eye attraction on the Thames.
Unusual weather patterns in the eastern Atlantic caused Britain’s least-sunny August since sunshine measurements began in 1929.

The Met Office said that there were only 105.5 hours of sunshine during the month, far less than the normal 165.1 hours.

The agency added it was also the fifth-wettest on record with an average of 5.5 inches (140 mm) of rain causing floods in some areas.

There were a few exceptions to the dull end of summer. Lerwick in Shetland, as well as the Isle of Wight, were fortunate enough to receive about 130 percent of the average sunshine levels during the month.

Meteorologists say the usual area of high pressure that forms each summer near the Azores failed to develop this summer.
