A moderate earthquake in far western China left at least 330 families homeless after the shaking destroyed buildings in the Xinjiang region on Friday afternoon, February 20.

The official Xinhua news agency reports that while there were no injuries or fatalities from the quake, the jolt did cause at least some damage to more than 10,000 houses in Kalpin and Akqi counties, in the Tian Shan Mountains.

Officials said that 181 of the homes were damaged to such an extent that they can no longer be lived in.

Hundreds of aftershocks rumbled across the region over the weekend as many camped out in tents or other places of shelter.

The 5.2 magnitude quake struck at 6:02 p.m. local time about 1,980 miles (3,180 km) west-northwest of Beijing, near the border with Kyrgyzstan, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
