While it had weakened to tropical storm force at the time it moved ashore over the city of Xiamen, high winds and flash flooding left at least one person dead and six others missing, according to Chinese state media.
Xinhua reports that the storm flooded almost 80,000 acres of cropland in Fujian. Local officials said they estimate direct economic losses from Linfa’s passage at over $49 million.
Tropical storm-force winds also lashed Taiwan, where four people were injured. An uprooted tree fell on two passing motorcyclists near the southern city of Tainan.
Two Taoist monks were hurt by a collapsing wall as they chanted during a funeral ceremony in Penghu, and island in the middle of the Taiwan Strait.
Remnants of the storm later brought heavy rain to far southern Japan.
