The counter-clockwise circulation of Tropical Storm Nangka can be seen swirling over the South China Sea, just to the west of Manila.
The second tropical disturbance to pass over the central Philippines within a week killed at least seven people as it triggered flooding, a tornado and a landslide.
One of the victims was a fisherman who drowned off Cebu. Six others were reported missing offshore in the wake of the storm.
Government officials say high winds and flooding destoyed a school and 23 houses.
Nangka was moving slowly northward over the South China Sea on Friday morning, packing maximum sustained winds of about 45 mph.
It was not expected to strengthen significantly on its predicted path into China’s Fujian province.
But similar predictions were made for Typhoon Linfa last week, which experienced significant intensification off the coast of China before making landfall.
Residents in Taiwan were also on alert in case the storm veers to the east.
