Cattle lie dead after jumping off a cliff near the picturesque Swiss Alpine village of Soustal.
A pile of 28 dead cows and three bull carcasses discovered hundreds of feet below a cliff in the Swiss Alps has police and local farmers baffled.
“In my 30 years in farming, I have never known a single cow to fall off a cliff, and now it seems they are queuing up to walk off like lemmings,” nearby resident Bernd Eberhardt told reporters.
Local police in the mountain village of Soustal say they are investigating the tragedy because “cows growing up in the mountains normally can estimate dangers and do not plunge down cliffs.”
Since there are no native scavengers left in the Alps to consume the cows’ remains, rescue teams removed the carcasses by helicopter so that they could properly be disposed of.
