Typhoon Choi-Wan Storms Across Pacific September 25, 2009
The large eye of Typhoon Choi-Wan can be seen collapsing as it weakened from a Category-3 storm on Monday to the southeast of Tokyo.
Super Typhoon Choi-Wan intensified to a Category 5 storm over the Western Pacific between the Northern Mariana Islands and Iwo Jima.

Maximum sustained winds at the tropical cyclone's peak intensity exceeded 200 mph, fortunately far from any significant land areas.

Choi-Wan started a weakening trend as it passed over cooler waters to the southeast of Japan. But it remained a category 1 storm at its closest approach to Japan's main island of Honshu on Monday.

Other than lashing some remote islands of the Northern Marianas chain, Choi-Wan was a threat only to shipping lanes.
