Trio of Tropical Cyclones Churn Western Pacific October 2, 2009
Melor and Parma were projected to become Category 4 storms, absorbing Tropical Storm 18's energy.
Three separate tropical cyclones formed in the wake of deadly Typhoon Ketsana, but at least two of them steered clear of the disaster zones left by that earlier storm in the Philippines and Vietnam.

Tropical Storm 18 formed briefly almost directly over Guam, but didn't retain storm strength long enough to be assigned a proper name.

Typhoon Melor was approaching the Northern Mariana Islands and quickly strengthening into a super typhoon.

Typhoon Parma was predicted to attain Category 4 force while taking aim on the northern Philippines late in the week.
