A moderate tremor centered near the coast of western India’s Maharashtra state caused residents to flee buildings on Saturday evening as walls cracked from the shaking.

The walls of as many as 39 homes in the Dhebewadi and Patan areas of the Satara district collapsed during the quake, according to local officials.

Another 150 houses around Dhebewadi, Malhar Peth, Karul, Helwak and Patan suffered cracks following the earthquake.

High-rise buildings in Mumbai and Pune rocked when the quake struck at 6:33 p.m. local time. A 3.9 magnitude aftershock was felt, but not as strongly, a short time later.

The country’s seismological department said the epicenter was about 6 miles northwest of Malkapur, Maharashtra, or 155 miles south-southeast of Mumbai.

The last comparable quake in the area was a 4.9 magnitude tremor on September 17, 2008, when at least one person was killed and significant damage occurred in the districts of Kolhapur, Pune, Sangli and Satara.
