Typhoon Nida Churns Western Pacific November 27, 2009
The eye of strengthening Typhoon Nida can be seen passing to the south of Guam on Wednesday.
Typhoon Nida strengthened to a Category 5 storm over the open waters of the western Pacific after forming days earlier near Micronesia.

Outer bands of the storm brought heavy thunderstorms to Guam and the rest of the Northern Mariana Islands on Wednesday.

Nida was expected to remain far from significant land areas while making a slow arc to the northeast late in the week.

The Japanese Island of Iwo Jima was on alert for a possible brush with Nida's high winds and heavy rainfall.
