Cyclone Magda Takes Aim on Northwest Australia January 22, 2010
Cyclone Magda can be seen intensifying as it neared Australia's Kimberley coast.
Residents along northwest Australia’s Kimberley coast region were bracing early Friday for the arrival of Cyclone Magda.

Western Australia's Fire and Emergency Services issued a cyclone alert for communities between Mitchell Plateau, in the state's far north, and Cape Leveque, south of Cockatoo Island.

One mining company evacuated more than 228 employees from its Mount Gibson iron ore minining facility off the Kimberley coast as a precaution against Magda’s strong winds and high seas.

Mount Gibson Iron told the Australian Associated Press that it was advised by the Bureau of Meteorology that the storm was likely to track directly over its Koolan Island mine about midday on Friday.

Magda is the third major storm of the November-to-April cyclone season in northwestern Australia.
