Deep Spanish Quake Related to 1954 Temblor April 16, 2010
Quake Map of Spain
A very powerful quake that struck beneath southern Spain on Sunday was barely noticeable because of its extraordinary depth of nearly 400 miles.

Such deep quakes are rare in Europe, with the last one in the region occurring in March 1954.

Since then, only a handful of quakes have occurred near the same epicenter, with most registering magnitudes of 3 or less.

Seismologists say Sunday’s deep quake was likely related to the 1954 temblor.
