Quake Map of China
At least 760 people died and 11,500 others were injured during a 6.9 magnitude temblor Wednesday morning centered in western China’s Qinghai Province.

The country’s official Xinhua news agency reports that more than 85 percent of the houses in Jiegu township near the epicenter collapsed due to the shaking.

Officials said that many students were buried beneath the rubble of a building that collapsed at a vocational school in Jiegu.

The quake occurred at the relatively shallow depth of only 6 miles beneath the county of Yushu, a Tibetan area of Qinghai, at 7:49 a.m. local time.

Ten minutes later, the same area was struck by a 5.3 magnitude aftershock, which was followed by several others during the hours that followed.
