The new kelp extract promises to be the first major naturally derived breakthrough to treat H1N1 swine flu.
Australian scientists say they have discovered a naturally occurring compound found in seaweed from off the coast of Tasmania that can prevent infection by the H1N1 strain of influenza.

Helen Fitton of Marinova Laboratories says the “ fucoidan” compound blocks the virus’s ability to use receptors to get into cells.

“With swine flu already becoming resistant to some other antiviral agents, we believe that the extract — known as Maritech 926 — offers a potent, natural alternative which supports the immune system against viral attacks,” Fitton told reporters.

Marinova managing director Paul Garrott says he expects the compound will be used in nasal sprays, hand washes and tablets once human trials are completed.

He said it’s not a substitute for the swine flu vaccination, but rather a first defense against infection.
