Jan Marszel and Richard Haynes of the Sussex County Cricket Club said they saw a small dark object hurtling toward them “out of a blue sky.”
Marszel was hit in the chest by part of the five-inch rock that bounced up after splitting on impact.
“We were quietly supping our pints, both looked up at the same time and saw a black object coming towards us — we didn’t know what it was,” said Haynes.
He said that had it come from the other direction, they might have suspected that it had been thrown by someone.
But both say it came from a great distance nearly parallel to the ground.
Imperial College meteorite expert Matthew Genge told the Telegraph: “If this turns out to be a meteorite, it’s very exciting and would be the first fall in the U.K. since 1992.”
