Tsunami Fears Follow Coastal Chile Quake August 13, 2010
Quake Map of Chile
Several communities in coastal Chile lost power as thousands of their residents fled to higher ground following a sharp quake on August 5.

The 5.7 magnitude quake was followed 33 minutes later by a somewhat weaker jolt.

Both quakes struck the same epicenter as the disastrous 8.8 magnitude temblor that caused an estimated $30 billion in damage to the region on February 27.

Thursday’s quakes were centered about 25 miles northeast of the coastal community of Lebu and 310 miles south-southwest of Santiago.

The EFE news agency reports many residents of Lebu remained in the nearby hills long after officials assured them that there was no threat of a tsunami.

About 100 people in the same area perished in a tsunami that struck shortly after the February quake.
