CIMSS Satellite Loop
Cyclone Cyril can be seen briefly forming an eye after it passed over Tonga's northern islands.
Tropical storm-force Cyclone Cyril drenched the northern islands of the South Pacific nation of Tonga late Tuesday and Wednesday.

The island government placed Ha'apai, Vava'u and the Niuatoputapu group of islets on alert for heavy rain and winds strong enough to cause structural damage.

Cyril was producing maximum sustained winds of about 45 mph as its center passed almost directly over the island of Nava’u.

Outer bands of the storm downed trees and caused light damage well to the north in Samoa.

HIgh surf was also reported as far away as Fiji.

Cyril later lost force well to the south of Tahiti and Bora Bora.
