The 5.4 magnitude quake struck at 5:29 a.m. local time only 12 miles southeast of the provincial capital at the relatively shallow depth of 9 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Officials said the shaking was "felt strongly" in Mendoza and the nearby town of Lujan de Cuyo.
No injuries or fatalities were reported due to the quake.
