Some buildings sustained superficial damage from the Aug. 16 quake, and there were numerous reports of items being tossed off of shelves.
But damage was more extensive near the epicenter on the South Island, about 30 miles southwest of Wellington.
The Marlborough region’s Riverlands Winery lost 65,000 gallons of wine down a drain when a wine tank was damaged by the shaking.
Officials said almost all of the homes in and around Seddon, as well as in Ward and Flaxbourne, had sustained damage.
Nine of the homes were deemed so unsafe that residents were ordered to evacuate.
The initial jolt struck at 2:31 p.m. on Friday, and was followed by several frightening aftershocks over the following weekend.
The shaking comes after a 6.5 quake in the same region on July 21 caused minor injuries to 25 people and damaged dozens of buildings.
