Humberto skirted the Cape Verde Islands as a tropical storm before attaining hurricane force at about the same hour Gustav did on the morning of Sept. 11.
By reaching hurricane strength before 8 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Wednesday, Humberto narrowly missed replacing Gustav as the modern-day record holder, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.
Humberto was the eighth tropical storm to form during the 2013 Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to Nov. 30.
It has historically peaked on Sept. 10, which is approximately only halfway through the season.
Humberto was predicted to lose hurricane status late in the week, then dissipate over the cooler waters of the central Atlantic Ocean.
