Typhoon Wutip left at least 60 people missing when it sank three fishing boats before striking the Vietnamese coast late Monday as a Category-2 storm, about 60 miles northwest of the port of Hue.
Some of the heaviest rains and winds lashed Ha Tinh and Quant Tri provinces. At least three people were killed on land there in storm-related accidents.
Wutip was still at hurricane force when it reached Laos and northeastern Thailand the following day.
Thailand had already experienced extensive flooding in northeastern areas during recent weeks and additional rainfall from Wutip added to the inundation, according to officials.
Wutip means “butterfly” in Cantonese.
