Explosive Lava Eruption from Japan Volcano February 12, 2016
Mount Sakurajima lava eruption
Lightning streaked around Mount Sakurajima's lava and ash cloud during the Feb. 5 eruption.
Southwestern Japan’s Mount Sakurajima volcano spewed lava, ash and gases during what volcanologists called an explosive eruption.

NHK television showed images of lightning flashing around the fountains of lava, which poured down the mountain’s flanks only a few miles east of the major port of Kagoshima.

Volcano expert Kazuhiro Ishihara told the public broadcaster that the impressive and colorful eruption was only average compared to Sakurajima’s past activity.
