Many alive before the birth of the “Space Age” can remember a time when vast areas of the world were so remote and inhospitable that they were out of reach to all but the boldest adventurers and explorers.

Before the last three decades, no detailed maps or topographical charts were available for many places. All that changed in the 1970s as high-resolution sensors on orbiting spacecraft began to capture detailed images of the surface. Here are some of those recent images.
