Indonesia's Mount Semeru exploded with a column of ash that soared high above the densely populated East Java province.

A nearby town was blanketed with volcanic debris, but officials say no injuries were reported.

"The ash rain fell on Saturday and Sunday but luckily we also have had heavy rains, so the ash was quickly cleaned from the surface," Edi Susanto, an official from the Lumajang district, told reporters.

Susanto said the ash had blanketed virtually everything in the town of Lumajang, 22 miles (22 km) from Seremu's summit. The community is accustomed to the occasional rain of ash from one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes.
