A spectacular 11-day eruption of Piton de la Fournaise volcano on the Indian Ocean island of Reunion subsided after the mountain spewed fountains of lava more than 1,500 feet (500 metres) high.
Vulcanologists said the intensity made it “the eruption of the century.”
Other scientists said they discovered hundreds of deep-water fish of unknown species floating belly-up in the ocean after the eruption ended.
Alain Barrere, an adviser to the island’s volcano observatory, said he and two scientists from Reunion’s aquarium collected specimens of the dead fish, some of which had bulging eyes and protracted heads.
“It’s crazy. We’ve never seen this with previous eruptions,” said Barrere. He hopes to determine where the fish came from and why they died.
