One of the geysers engulfed by a massive landslide on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, bursting through the layer of mud on Tuesday.
A massive landslide engulfed a spectacular geyser valley on Far East Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, possibly causing all but the most powerful of the valley's 90 geysers to disappear forever.
A torrent of mud, trees, snow and stones covered two-thirds of the unique nature park, damming the valley’s Geysernaya River and creating a large lake over the geyser field.
Experts believe the river will not be powerful enough to dislodge the blockage.
Some of the valley’s more powerful geysers appeared again four days after the mudslide covered them. NTV and Vesti-24 broadcast footage of white steam rising from the ground.
The site is one of only five such geyser valleys in the world. It has attracted about 3,000 tourists annually to the remote region since it was opened for public view in 1991.
