The summit of Costa Rica's Turrialba volcano before this week's mild explosive eruption.
Costa Rica’s Turrialba volcano spewed gas and vapor more than a mile into the sky in its first eruption since 1866.
Park rangers and volcano experts first noticed increased unrest within the mountain, and vegetation dying around it, several months ago.
The Costa Rican Volcanic and Seismologic Observatory said it had received reports from eyewitnesses who said fields had begun burning near the volcano, which is located only 25 miles (40 km) from the capital, San Jose.
The area around the mountain is used to cultivate sugar cane and coffee. It is also a popular tourist destination.
There were no reports of injuries or damage to structures due to the eruption.
