Earthquakes Rattle Northern Chile December 28, 2007

Northern Chile’s Tarapaca region was jolted by two small earthquakes on Tuesday that caused alarm but no significant damage, according to the country’s Regional Emergency Office.

The strongest quake registered a magnitude of 5.8 at 1:21 p.m. local time, and lasted for about 40 seconds.

The office said it was centered near the Bolivian border at a depth of about 50 miles (78 km).

Northern Chile’s Antofagasta region also received another aftershock of the November 14 quake that wrecked thousands of homes.

The latest aftershock of that 7.7 magnitude temblor struck at 9:15 a.m. and was centered 45 miles (75 km) north of Antofagasta.
